The happiness of a Pune-based couple knew no bounds when they were informed by the Colaba police that their teenage daughter, who had been missing since the Independence Day, has returned to the police safely. The victim, said the police, had run away from her home because her mother had scolded her for watching television.

According to the police, on August 15, the staff at the Colaba mobile van — that was patrolling the Gateway of India to regulate the traffic — spotted a young girl loitering around alone.

Sensing something amiss, woman police constable Jijabai Pawar approached the girl and asked her name. The girl told the police that she was 17-year-old and a resident of Dehu, Tak Haveli district in Pune.

On further inquiry, the girl told the police that she had lost her parents long ago. But, not satisfied with her explanation, constable Pawar tactfully took the girl in confidence after which the latter revealed that she had run away from home.

"She said her mother had scolded her for watching TV after which she got upset and in a fit of rage, she left her home from Dehu and came to Mumbai immediately," said a police officer.

The police then brought the girl to the police station and contacted her parents after she provided their contact. "The girl's parents visited the police station on Thursday and after proper identification, the custody of minor girl was handed over to them," said the officer.
