Punjab honours army deserters

The Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government in Punjab doubled on Tuesday the monthly pension of more than 75 personnel who had deserted the army in the wake of Operation Bluestar and were dismissed by the Centre.

In its last term in 2001, the Akali Dal government had recognised “their service in the name of the Sikh religion” and honoured them with a monthly pension of Rs1,500. It also promised them and their kin job reservations.
