CHANDIGARH: The daughter of Punjab's director general of police (DGP) S S Virk has filed a case of harassment for dowry against her police officer husband and in-laws.
In her complaint to a local court in Pune, where her in-laws reside, Virk's daughter Jasleen Kaur, a doctor by profession, alleged that her Indian Police Service (IPS) officer husband Vikramjit Singh and her in-laws had been harassing her to bring more dowry.
In her complaint, she alleged that her in-laws were demanding cash, jewellery and an expensive car.
Her husband Vikramjit is an IPS officer of the Kerala cadre and is at present posted as additional superintendent of police in Thiruvananthapuram.
Jasleen married Vikramjit in June last year. She came back to her father's home here seven months ago after her harassment for dowry started.
Virk was unavailable for comment Thursday despite attempts. He has been state police chief for nearly two years.
Sources close to the family said that both sides were trying for a rapprochement in the case.
Jasleen filed her complaint in a Pune court Aug 18. The court asked the local police there to register a dowry harassment case Aug 29 under section 498-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Her father-in-law Harinder Inder Singh, a retired army brigadier, and mother-in-law Dharam Devi were arrested by the Pune police and were later released on bail.
The Pune police have written to the ministry of home affairs (MHA) seeking permission to arrest Jasleen's husband. MHA permission is required as Vikramjit is a serving IPS officer of the 2004 batch.
Jasleen had alleged that her father had spent between Rs.3.5-4 million on her marriage last year. The wedding took place at Chimney Heights resort, 15 km from here, and was graced by the who's who of the region.
