Rahul Gandhi came in for criticism from the opposition in Tamil Nadu, especially the Vaiko-led MDMK and the CPI, for saying that inter-linking rivers nationally will be ecologically disastrous.

The comment exposes his immaturity, the parties said. Vaiko also criticised Rahul for claiming that India was taking measures to ensure the rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka. “Inter-linking of rivers has been debated since the time of Nehru. Even Indira Gandhi tried to push the project. Rahul Gandhi seems to have come up with new findings, which is a joke,” Vaiko said. He also slammed Rahul for stating that the Centre was pressursing Lanka to mitigate the woes of Tamils.

CPI state secretary D Pandian said, “Inter-linking rivers is crucial for Tamil Nadu, which suffers a perennial shortage of water. It is strange that Rahul Gandhi supports inter-linking of rivers within states, but opposes the move at the national level.”
