Rajinikanth meets a fan in Chennai on Tuesday

Rajinikanth's comments came a month after actor Kamal Hassan's announcement that he would enter politics and float his own party after touring the state.

In yet another attempt on keeping the suspense alive over his anticipated entry into politics, superstar Rajinikanth on Tuesday announced that he would make his decision clear on December 31.

"I don't say I am entering politics. I will announce my stand on politics on December 31," he said while addressing his fans on the opening day of a six-day-long photo session.

Rajinikanth's comments came a month after actor Kamal Hassan's announcement that he would enter politics and float his own party after touring the state.

Stating that the media seems to be more interested in his political entry than the people, the 67-year-old Rajinikanth said that he was in the politics since 1996, referring to his support to DMK-Tamil Maanila Congress to unseat AIADMK government led by the then chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the state polls. He had said, "Even God can't save Tamil Nadu if Jayalalithaa returns to power."

Following Jayalalithaa's death in December and now the ailing condition of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, there is more pressure from his fans to take a political plunge considering the political vacuum.

"I am hesitant to join politics since I both the pros and cons of it. Otherwise I would have been already in ii. If it is war, we have to win it. To emerge victorious in the war, one not only require courage but also strategy," he said pointing to his biceps, and then his temple.

Waiting game

  • Earlier in May, another photo session had  sparked speculation of his political ambitions.
  • He has now, too, clarified that he didn’t say he would announce his political entry
