Rise in sexual harassment cases at workplace: WCD Minister Maneka Gandhi

The number of compalints registered with the National Commission for Women (NCW) concerning sexual harassment of women at workplaces has been showing an increasing trend lately, the government said on Friday.

This information was shared in Lok Sabha by Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi in a written reply to a question.

"The numbers of complaints of sexual harassment of women at work places registered with National Commission of Women (NCW) during the last two years and current year shows an increasing trend," Gandhi said in her written reply. As per the data provided by her for the current year, 336 complaints of sexual harassment at workplace were registered in NCW upto December 12, 2014.

There were 249 such cases registered in 2013, 167 in 2012 and 170 in 2011 with the NCW, as per the data provided by the minister.

In reply to a separate question, Gandhi said that as per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, there is increase in reporting of child marriage cases.

In response to yet another question, she said the WCD ministry has instituted two awards 'Rajya Mahila Samman' and 'Zila Mahila Samman'.
