The garbage will be segregated and only organic waste will be dumped there. “It will help increase the capacity of the landfill site,” the official added.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has earmarked Rs 5 crore to prepare the Bhalswa landfill site in north-west Delhi for reuse as a garbage dump in the 2017-18 financial year. The site, overburdened with city’s waste and resultant fires, has also been a source of air pollution.

The Department of Environment Management Services (DEMS) of north Corporation will be taking on the project. “Under the plan, we will generate electricity from the garbage at the sanitary landfill site (SLF) in Bhalswa. We are in the process of inviting tenders for the same,” said a senior north Corporation official.

The garbage will be segregated and only organic waste will be dumped there. “It will help increase the capacity of the landfill site,” the official added.

The garbage collected from four zones under the corporation’s jurisdiction — City, Sadar Paharganj, Narela and Karol Bagh — is dumped at Bhalswa.

At present, the areas under the corporation generate 3,600 metric tonne of garbage per day.

By 2021, garbage generation will go up to 7,600 metric tonnes per day and an area of 500 acre will be required for its disposal. While the civic body is grappling with the shortage of land available in the city for dumping garbage, reusing the site will help manage the space crisis.
