The police are yet to get any substantial lead into the murder of Right To Information (RTI) activist Amit Jethwa, who had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) against illegal mining in Gir forest region.

The two men who shot Jethwa from a close range when he was coming out of his lawyer's office near the Gujarat high court last night have not been identified yet, the police said.

A country-made gun and two 12-bore cartridges found at the crime scene have been sent to the forensic lab for testing.

According to the police, the registration number of the motorcycle left behind by the assailants was found to be fake. Sniffer dogs were called in to trace the duo who fled taking advantage of the darkness in the area.

HM Kundaliya, inspector at Sola police station where the complaint has been lodged, said efforts are on to nab the culprits. However, they have not been identified yet.

Witnesses are being quizzed along with the family members of the deceased, he said.

Jethwa was active in the conservation of wildlife, especially lions in the Gir sanctuary. He had also helped the police solve some cases related to lion poaching.
