Now lemons are considered good luck by Hindus across the world, and it’s believed it can ward off the evil eye. But things took a rather bizarre turn when one ‘sacred lemon’ fetched the whopping price of Rs 39,000. The lemon was sold at an auction conducted by a temple in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu as part of the Panguni Uthiram festival.

It is the custom of the authorities to auction the fruit spiked on the spear of Lord Muruga at the Balathandayupthapani temple during the last day of the 11-day festival at Tiruvanainallur. It is believed the lemon will bring prosperity and fertility.
