Accusing the Congress-led UPA government of defending those involved in the second generation mobile spectrum scam, Commonwealth Games corrution and rice import scams, the BJP national secretary Kirit Somaiya today said that this resulted in high inflation.

"Rupees four lakh-crore worth scams are linked to 2G spectrum scam, Commonwealth Games corrution and rice export. After these scams, inflation in the country has shot up," Somaiya told reporters here.

He said that the centre had decided to export rice to five African nations in 2008-09, and the export was to be carried out by government agencies. But the contract was later given to private firms, leading to the loss of over Rs2000 crore to the exchequer, he alleged.

The BJP leader claimed that when the government carried out inquiry into the export, irregularities came to the light, and a rice-export firm was blacklisted.

Despite this, the Union minister of state for commerce and industries Jyotiraditya Scindia felicitated the same firm for its outstanding performance in exports at a function of federation of indian exporters organisation some days back, Somaiya alleged.

"This shows that the government was trying to defend the people involved in scam," he said.
