Schools in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Hapur and Uttarakhand's Haridwar will remain closed from Monday to Friday (July 29 to August 2) due to Kanwar Yatra 2024. This year, Shivratri falls on August 2, hence, the number of devotees is likely to swell to more than 10 lakh. The Kanwar Yatra began on July 22 and will continue until August 6, 2024.
“Over the next few days, the Yatra will see lakhs of devotees from across the state converge at Ghaziabad’s Dudeshwar Nath temple," said Dharmendra Sharma, the district inspector of schools, in Ghaziabad. He added that any institution found violating the order would face penalties, TOI reported. Approximately 50 higher secondary and 80 primary schools are situated along the Kanwar route in the city.
In Muzaffarnagar, District Magistrate Arvind Mallapa announced the closure of schools and colleges from July 26 to August 2, 2024, reports suggested. The order mandates the closure of all primary, upper primary, secondary, CBSE, ICSE board-recognized schools, madrasas, degree colleges, DIET, and technical institutes for eight days from July 26 to August 2, 2024.
Similarly, the Hapur administration has also announced a school holiday for all government and private schools until August 2, 2024, for the same period due to the yatra. In Uttarakhand's Haridwar, schools will remain closed from July 27 to August 2, 2024.
