In view of Republic Day tomorrow, Punjab police has beefed up security in the border districts of Amritsar, Ferozepur and Gurdaspur.
Inspector general in state police Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota said, "A high alert has already been issued in view of Republic Day preparations in all the three border districts of Amritsar, Ferozepur and Gurdaspur adjoining to the Pakistan border."
"About 7,000 policemen will be deployed round the clock till January 26, and there would not be any let up in safety.
Security has also been beefed up at all entry and exit points, including Rajasansi International Airport, railway stations and bus stands in the three districts and frisking has been made mandatory," he said.
The Special Branch of the state police has been asked to monitor all vulnerable points, the IG said, adding it was keeping vigil on history sheeters, particulary smugglers.
The BSF is also keeping strict vigil along the international border with deployment of additional personnel at Attari.
"Heavy deployment of BSF troops has been made at the Indo-Pak 'Joint Check Post' at the Attari border," force DIG Mohammad Aquil said.
Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal will unfurl the national flag in the district tomorrow. Aquil said women personnel have also been deployed at the post to frisk female visitors.
Jawans were also ordered to remain vigilant to avert any kind of smuggling or infiltration into India from Pakistan, he said.
Security forces were already on the alert in Punjab after the recovery of two live grenades in Zirakpur, barely 1.5km from the Indian Air Force station near Chandigarh on January 23.
