Security beefed up in view of 12th anniversary of serial blast in Tamil Nadu

Fifty eight people were killed and 200 injured when 19 bomb blasts rocked the city in quick succession on February 14, 1998.

Security has been beefed up across the district in view of the 12th anniversary of the 1998 serial bomb blasts tomorrow.

1998 coinciding with the visit of BJP leader LK Advani for
addressing an election campaign meeting for the then Lok Sabha polls. Properties worth about Rs 100 crore were also lost in the blasts.

Police said about 2,500 strong police force, including armed guards, Tamil Nadu special police battalions, rapid action force and CRPF would be deployed on bandobust duty in the city.

Over 3,000 police personnel and para-military forces would be deployed in the rural limits as part of the arrangements, police said.

Armed guards would be positioned near places of worship and
communally sensitive areas besides intensifying night patrolling, they said.

More pickets would be erected besides intensifying vehicle checking on district-borders as part of the preparations, they
said.
