The accused has been identified as Rajendra Shukla who has only studied till class 8. The incident happened in Saini village in Sultanpur district on Wednesday (March 17) night.

The 30-year-old quack was hired by Rajesh Saini, the owner of Maa Sharda Hospital to perform surgeries at the ill-equipped facility in the village, according to a report in Times of India.

The horrific incident got highlighted after the victim’s husband Rajaram approached the police. Rajaram filed an FIR stating that his 33-year-old wife Poonam and their newborn baby died due to medical negligence.

"We found that Rajesh Sahni was running an unregistered nursing facility with no infrastructure to perform surgeries. Quacks used razor blade to perform surgeries," the report quoted Arvind Chaturvedi, SP Sultanpur as saying.

When Poonam went into labour on Wednesday, Rajaram took her to a midwife who advised him to shift Poonam to a primary health care centre in Deeh area.

"At the PHC, Poonam was examined was by an auxiliary nurse who advised Rajaram to take her to a hospital as her condition deteriorated," said Amrendra Singh, SHO Baldiram

After the quack performed the C-section surgery on Poonam, she started bleeding profusely. Rajendra then told Rajaram to rush his wife to the district hospital. However, as there was no hospital nearby, Poonam was rushed to Lucknow’s KGMU Trauma Centre which was 140 km away. She succumbed to her injuries there.

Based on a complaint from the victim's husband, both Shukla and Sahni have been booked by the police for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The unregistered nursing facility was running with the help of quacks and midwives.

The police have now reached out to Sultanpur CMO to take action against illegal clinics.
