Six labourers were hacked to death by a suspected militant in a tea garden in Assam's Nagaon district following a dispute over a road construction contract, officials said today.

The militant belonging to All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) allegedly attacked the labourers inside Rajabari tea estate last night after a fight erupted over one of them getting a sub-contract for the construction of a road.

The victims were identified as Britenjit Marak, Haren Bordoloi, Amal Das, Damini Changmai, Munindra Barman and Tapas Chakraborty.

Udal Marak, a Congress member and local Panchayat president, was injured in the attack.

A search was on for the militant and 11 others have been picked up for interrogation, the sources added.
