Surat Municipal Corporation has identified four routes to be developed under Metro Rail. The civic body has also sanctioned amount of Rs1 crore for checking feasibility of these four routes and if the report confirm feasibility, civic body will initiate process to prepare DPR of this project.
The four routes, identified by the standing committee are the 19 km route from Dumas Resorts to Sarthana Octroi Naka (this route is being developed under BRTS and metro will be developed alongside), Sayan to Surat, Outer ring road and along banks of river Tapi from Kamrej to Ambika niketan.
“We have selected these routes after considering all aspects. In future, when Surat’s city limit will expand and people need to travel to important points, Metro will prove helpful for commuting. We have allocated a fund of Rs1 crore for preparing feasibility report of these routes,” said Bhimji Patel, chairman of the standing committee. He added that four routes will cater maximum population in Surat and those living in nearby areas.
Following the decision, SMC has initiated process for selecting a suitable consultant to prepare feasibility report. It has asked different consultants in India to provide their proposals for the project. Meanwhile, SMC has created Metro Cell with city-based engineer Jatin Shah as its head, to smoothen works related to the project.
