An alleged timber smuggler was today killed and another injured when security forces opened fire in Shopian district, sparking protests in the south Kashmir district.
The timber smuggler died on the spot, while his accomplice was injured when army troops opened fire at them in Keller, 65 kms from here, a police spokesman said.
The troops noticed some suspicious movement in the forest
area and asked them to stop. The duo, however, did not respond
following which the army personnel opened fire.
Protesting against the incident, villagers torched two army vehicles, he said, adding four persons were injured when
army jawans opened fired on the demonstrators.
