Congress president Sonia Gandhi turned 60 on Saturday and was greeted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues and top party leaders.

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi turned 60 on Saturday and was greeted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues and top party leaders.

Several Union Ministers were the first to call on Gandhi and were soon followed by the Prime Minister. CWC members also offered their greetings to the party chief.

A major highlight was the Congress Seva Dal volunteers presenting 60 saplings to Gandhi that will be given to the various Pradesh Congress Committee presidents for planting in their states.

Several Congress leaders, party Chief Ministers, PCC chiefs and state ministers were already in the capital.

She was born in 1946 in the town of Or Orbassano, near Turin (Italy) and married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968. She became Congress chief in 1998 and was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1999.
