A 62-year-old man on a morning walk was run over by a speeding BMW in east Delhi on Thursday.
His family alleged he bled to death as police did not rush him to hospital.
Angry over the incident, locals who had gathered at the accident site blocked traffic, disrupting vehicular movement on Vikas Marg. The mob also raised anti-police slogans and severely damaged the BMW.
Om Dutt Chauhan, a resident of Pandav Nagar, was taking a walk near the Akshardham temple when the BMW, which was trying to overtake a bike, hit him at around 6.30 am.
The car driven by Raman Singhla, 27, overturned due to the impact. “Raman is son of Karkardooma-based businessman Baburam Singhla. We have arrested him and a case of culpable homicide and rash and negligent driving has been registered,” a senior police officer said.
Relatives and eyewitnesses said Chauhan was bleeding on the road for about 30 minutes.
His nephew Sandeep said, “The cops first took the offenders [there were two more persons in the car] to police station, instead of rushing my uncle to hospital. Had they taken prompt action, he could have been saved.”
An eyewitness said: “The victim was in pain for three hours, but there was no initiative by cops to take him to hospital.”
A police officer, however, denied the allegation.
He said: “The victim was taking a walk near Akshardham Chowk at around 6.30 am.
A car, which was trying to overtake a motorcycle, ran over him. We rushed to the spot and took the victim to hospital.”
