The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and 70 of his party members had been accused of irregularities in the allotment of liquor licences.

The Supreme Court today upheld the Andhra Pradesh high court's judgment that the complaint filed against former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and other leaders of his Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in a corruption case was "politically motivated".

A bench of justice Markandeya Katju and justice TS Thakur dismissed a special leave petition filed by former state Congress legal cell chief Naguluri Krishna Kumar Goud, challenging the high court's order.

The Supreme Court's ruling comes as a relief for Naidu.

In 2003, a special anti-corruption court had ordered an investigation into Goud's complaint that a loss of Rs500 crore was caused to the state exchequer by then chief minister Naidu and other TDP politicians by awarding excise contracts on extraneous considerations.

Goud had accused Naidu, excise minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao, and 69 others of irregularities in the allotment of liquor licences.

The TDP leaders challenged the special court's direction and the Andhra Pradesh high court struck down the complaint, saying the case was politically motivated.
