LUCKNOW: Sleuths of the Military Intelligence wing and the Uttar Pradesh Anti- Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday started grilling a suspected Pakistani Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI) agent, arrested from here on Wednesday.
Identified as Abdul Jabbar alias Sikander, the suspected spy, arrested from the Charbagh railway station on Wednesday, was remanded in police custody for a week by a court.
He was later taken to an unknown destination by a joint team of the army and ATS.
The ISI suspect was found to be in possession of certain incriminating documents, including some hand-sketched maps of important sites in the Lucknow cantonment, which is the headquarters of the Indian Army's Central Command.
The police were unwilling to divulge details of the other "defence-related" documents recovered from him.
But additional director general of police and STF chief Brij Lal saidthat "the man has not only confessed his Pakistani origin (a resident of Karachi) but also his links with the ISI".
"Some of the documents seized from him were of classified nature," he said.
"Sikander was apparently trained under the Pakistan Military Intelligence and was here on a mission," Lal said.
He is believed to have arrived in Uttar Pradesh via Nepal well before the Mumbai attack.
"His arrest followed vital intelligence inputs about sneaking in by a couple of ISI agents through the highly porous India-Nepal border," said the STF chief, who did not rule out the possibility of Sikander's accomplices being on the loose.
