Syrian President Bashar al-Assad invites India to play active role in reconstruction of economy

Bashar also welcomed India's objective position on the conflict in Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has invited India to play an active role in the reconstruction of the Syrian economy. "As a growing power, India has a role to play in meeting the challenge of terrorism," sources quoted Assad as saying.

Assad has also welcomed India's objective position on the conflict in Syria in a meeting with MoS MEA MJ Akbar, reported ANI quoting sources.

"There was an agreement between both sides for further upgrading security consultations," the sources said. However, there was no confirmation about the level of upgradation.

In Syria, Akbar called on the Assad and Prime Minister Emad Mohammed Deeb Khamis. The discussions between them would also focus on bilateral cooperation and the unfolding security situation in the region.

Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar is on an official visit to Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq from August 17 to 23 to strengthen bilateral ties with the West Asia region.

Briefing media in New Delhi , Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said Akbar's visit to these countries is a reaffirmation of deep interest in promoting bilateral relations and in the peace and security in the region.

In his discussions with the Lebanese leadership, he covered bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest. During his visit to Iraq, the minister will hold discussions with the Foreign Minister of Iraq, on various issues of mutual interest. The visit is expected to add further impetus to bilateral engagement.
