NEW DELHI: A day after resigning from the UPA government, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader K Chandrasekara Rao on Wednesday began an indefinite humger strike to press his party's demand for a separate state of Telangana to be carved out of Andhara Pradesh.
Rao, accompanied by scores of TRS activists from Telangana as well as Delhi and four other TRS MPs including A Narendra, started his hunger strike at the Jantar Mantar here.
Former Prime Minister V P Singh visited the striking TRS leader to express his solidarity.
Apart from Narendra, Ravindra Nayak, Madhusudan Reddy and Vinod Rao, all MPs also joined the protest.
Ending an uneasy stay in the UPA coalition government, Rao, Labour Minister in the Cabinet and other party MPs resigned on Tuesday for not being happy with the government on the separate state issue.
V P Singh appealed to the UPA to reconsider the TRS demand for creation of a separate Telengana state.
"I fully support the demand for Telengana. It is a justified cause and UPA should fulfil its commitment given to TRS while forming the government two-and-a-half years ago," Singh told reporters.
He also appealed to Rao to reconsider his decision to go on fast, saying the TRS leader should look after his health as he has to keep up the fight for the Telangana cause.
TRS activists, sporting pink-coloured shawls that matched the party flag, sang and danced to folk songs at the Jantar Mantar.
