Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek was on Sunday slapped during Trinamool Congress youth wing rally. The incident took place in East Midnapore in West Bengal where Abhishek Banerjee was addressing a rally.
A man who is yet to be identified climbed on to the elevated platform and jumped ahead to slap Banerjee.
Police officials said that the party worker, who is yet to be identified, suddenly climbed up to the stage and slapped Banerjee, President of the Trinamool Youth Congress, when he was addressing the rally.
TMC leader Derek O'Brien, on the slap incident, said that it could be a handy work of an outsider and that they are still looking into it. "Someone wanted to come on stage to click a photo with him, may be he was slapped on that pretext," he said.
Other party workers soon caught the man and beat him up, they said, adding, he was being taken to the hospital. After the incident the rally of party's youth wing did not progress.
Reports of media personnel being allegedly beaten and equipment trashed have also surfaced.
