VADODARA: A group of transgenders has taken the lead in providing relief to thousands of flood-affected people in about eight villages of Junagadh district of Gujarat.

A group of about 15 transgenders who hail from different parts of Saurashtra region have been supplying food packets to the villagers of Vanthali taluka who were badly affected in the floods.

They have been making food all by themselves, packing them in polythene packets and distributing it among the poor and slum-dwellers.

"We have been distributing food-packets since last two days," said Sanju Masi, one of the members of the group.

"When we saw the plight of some of the poor during the floods, we decided to cook food for them," said Sanju.

Junagadh is one of the badly affected districts of the state in the recent rains.

"Ideally the local administration should have comeforward to help the flood affected people. But when they did not, we decided to pitch in," Sanju added.

The group has been making 'pooris' and snacks and supplying it to about eight villages of Vanthali taluka including Shahpur and Nana Kajali.

"We do not mind pooling in our personal resources for a noble cause," said a transgender who did not want to be identified.
