Treat Lokpal draft equally: Shanti Bhushan to govt

Team Anna also took objection to law minister M Veerappa Moily's comments that government’s version is the real one while civil society’s version is a dissent note.

Accusing government of giving an inaccurate version of the civil society’s draft on Lokpal Bill, Team Anna on Monday demanded equal weightage for their draft as compared to government’s draft Lokpal bill. They also took objection to law minister M Veerappa Moily’s comments that government’s version is the “real one” while civil society’s version is a “dissent note.”

In a letter to Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, Lokpal bill’s joint drafting committee’s co-chairman Shanti Bhushan said anyone reading the section-wise comparative analysis chart of government and civil society’s Lokpal bill draft, released by Moily, would be “completely in the dark about the provisions of” team Anna’s draft bill.

“This chart does not present Jan Lokpal bill (JLB) accurately. Whereas there are inaccuracies at many places, the sections from Jan Lokpal bill have also not been fully quoted at many other places. Any person reading this chart will be completely in the dark about the provisions of the Jan Lokpal bill,” said Bhushan, who is a former Union law minister.

He recounted that in their last meeting on June 22, they had decided that “both the drafts will be taken to cabinet and to the political parties.”
