The trekking route to the holy Kedarnath shrine has grown dangerous leading to several deaths and injuries, a report has suggested.
In a research conducted by the scientists of Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, it has been found that the stretch from 'Bhim Pul' to Kedarnath is turning more perilous with every passing day.
The scientists suggested that the route be repaired as the road is full of heavy rocks which keep on falling near Lincholi. "As the route is becoming fatally hazardous with every day, a new route should be discovered," said scientist Dr DP Dobhal.
A similar research was carried out by concerned bodies in 2013 as well. Even then, the Wadia Institute submitted several reports to the Centre, state government and administrative authorities. All reports designated the route as dangerous and unfit for trekking.
The administration had developed an alternative region after the disastrous 2013 floods which rocked the entire town of Kedarnath. However, these roads are not smooth. Close to ten avalanches have been spotted and the rocks from these avalanches are spread all over the route as they break down at the onset of summer. As a result, every year, about eight to ten feet of snow has to be cleared to make the route available for devotees.
"The mountain housing the trekking route has an inclination of 70 to 80 degrees. That's why the debris from these rocks falls at an alarming speed, thanks to the steep angle," said Dobhal.
Meanwhile, some experts believe otherwise. Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director General, Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology, said, "The entire area is highly sensitive. Therefore, though a new route is possible, its success cannot be determined."
