Tripura police on Thursday arrested a private tutor for chopping off the hand of a girl pupil and injuring her mother, police here said.
"Sanjoy Das, 40, had attacked a middle aged woman and her daughter Susmita Das, 19, with a 'Dao' (a sharp weapon), severing one of Susmita's hands and the fingers of other," a police spokesman said.
The incident occured on Wednesday evening in Kamalpur, 130 km north of Agartala, when Susmita was returning home along with her mother.
Police said that Sanjoy, Susmita's tutor, had fallen in love with the Class 12 student and they had eloped to neighbouring Bangladesh last year. They returned to Kamalpur in September last year.
"Recently, Susmita had spurned Sanjoy, who then become enraged and commited this cruel act," police added.
Susmita and her mother, Rina Das, have been shifted to the Gobinda Ballav Pant Medical College and Hospital. Their condition is stated to be critical.
Susmita's father, Sukhendu Das, a daily wageer, has demanded exemplary punishment to the tutor.
In a separate incident Thursday, a youth assaulted a college girl at Dharmanagar in northern Tripura, 200 km north of here, after the latter rejected his advances.
The girl was shifted to a government hospital in a serious condition. The attacker is absconding.
