Two expensive paintings by legendary Russian artist Nicholas Roerich were stolen from the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) and auctioned in London, prompting the CBI to alert the Interpol about it.
The CBI has registered a case in this regard last month and questioned staff of the Institute.
The paintings depicting Himalayas were some of the precious works of the Russian painter who came to India in 1923 and stayed here till his death in 1947.
The Institute recently came to know that the missing paintings have been auctioned in London for two million dollars.
After coming to know about the theft, the Institute had filed a complaint with the CBI.
The agency is probing the role of insiders in the Institute and how these paintings reached London.
Sources in the agency say they have alerted the Interpol about the stolen paintings and are trying to get them back to India.
