A 17-year-old teenager was arrested by the UK police on Tuesday in connection with the unprovoked killing of Indian student Anuj Bidve, who was shot dead in what could be a hate-crime.

The unnamed teenager was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in the early hours of Tuesday after a warrant was executed, the police said.

Hailing from Pune, Bidve, 23, was a postgraduate student of micro-electronics at Lancaster University and was visiting friends in Manchester during the Christmas holidays when he was gunned down. Autopsy revealed that Bidve died as a result of “gun trauma” to the head.

Meanwhile, the news of Bidve’s death has shocked his family in Pune which is struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.  A resident of Chandan Nagar and alumni of Sinhagad College of Engineering, Bidve went to the UK only three months ago for his masters degree.

His family is now faced with the Herculean task of getting his body to India.

“Four weeks is the period that the UK police told us after which they will release the body. It’s too long; his parents are in shock and cannot wait for so long,” said Aditya Salunkhe, Anuj’s cousin. Shockingly neither the embassy nor the police or university informed the family of his death. It was an update on Facebook by a friend that alerted the family to the incident.
