Uncertainty prevails on the duration of the winter session of Parliament as the government is looking for enough business to keep the proceedings on for the proposed period of six weeks.
The government is in search of enough business for the session which has so far remained a month-long exercise. As many as 14 bills have been referred to the
Parliamentary Standing Committees after their introduction in the earlier sessions and their reports were awaited, sources said.
They said as the reports on the bills are pending, the government has to work hard to find extra business for the six-week long session. At the end of the budget session, both government and opposition had favoured at least 100 sittings of Parliament in a year and the ensuing winter session to be a six-week affair. Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar even felt Parliament should sit for at least 110 days in a year.
Normally, the winter session lasts for four weeks beginning in the last week of November to end just before Christmas. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs is expected to meet sometime next week to decide the schedule for the winter session.
