Vice-chancellor Dr Jasbeer Singh Ahluwalia of Guru Granth Sahib World University was shot at by unidentified assailants in Punjab.

The vice-chancellor of an SGPC-run university, Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, was today shot and injured by an unidentified assailant outside his office.

As Ahluwalia stepped out of the office of the newly established Guru Granth Sahab World University, an assailant who was waiting there shot at him and fled, police sources said.

He was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) at Chandigarh, about 40km from here.

Sources at PGIMER said that Ahluwalia was unconscious when he was brought to the hospital and had been admitted to the emergency ward, where a team of doctors was attending to him.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had recently inaugurated the University's academic session which began last month. Some radical outfits had been opposed to Ahluwalia's appointment as the VC. He had earlier also served as the vice-chancellor the Punjabi University at Patiala.
