In retaliation to Rahul Gandhi’s visit to aggrieved farmers’ families in Aligarh on Saturday, the Mayawati government has lashed out at the UPA regime holding it responsible for fuelling Maoist insurgency.
In a statement released here on Sunday, Mayawati called the Centre anti-farmer and said the Congress-led government had acquired farmers’ agricultural land all over the country and had not even compensated them appropriately.
Rahul had paid a surprise visit to the villages where three farmers were recently killed in the violence following their agitation seeking better compensation. The Mayawati government has been acquiring land for the Rs90,000-crore Yamuna Expressway, a 165-km road between Greater Noida and Agra, being built by Jay Pee Group.
Mayawati has said that she would support the farmers’ gheraoing parliament on Thursday and her government would ensure appropriate compensation to farmers.
“The Centre’s policies are responsible for increased Maoist activities. When farmers are rendered landless, they take to violence against the state. This is a situation created by the Congress-led government… it is responsible for the recent Maoist violence,” UP cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told the media.
