DCP Anarwala says it will also help reduce the number of accidents.

There is one solution to prevent accidents and to save petrol: "Use public transport," said DCP traffic, MM Anarwala. In the 'Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight 2010', organised by public sector oil companies, Anarwala was the chief guest and spoke on conservation of petroleum products.

"By just switching off the vehicle on traffic signals -- everyone together -- will save petrol worth crores of rupees. Similarly, by using a pressure cooker, housewives can also avoid overuse of cooking gas," he said.

According to Anarwala, vehicular population is increasing speedily. "Roads are not expanding at the same pace as number of vehicles. Using individual vehicles will result in more consumption of fuel and also the number of accidents will increase. Hence, travelling in public transport will prevent accidents and will also save petrol," he said.

Agreeing with Anarwala, the area marketing manager of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Santosh Nivendkar said that of the total forex, 70% is gone in oil import. "Less consumption of fuel will also help in saving our forex," he said.
