The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday suspended Hathras superintendent of police (SP), deputy superintendent of police (DSP), station inspector and some other officials over the gangrape and death of the 19-year-old woman that has triggered nationwide protests. The action comes soon after CM Yogi Adityanath said the Uttar Pradesh government is committed to the safety of all women.
The Special Investigation Team, which was set up to look into the case, has submitted an initial report which calls for the suspension of the senior police officials who “mismanaged” the case. The SIT has also asked for a lie-detector tests of all involved in the case, including the family members.
Earlier in the day, CM Yogi tweeted, "In Uttar Pradesh, whosoever tries to bring dishonour the self-respect of mothers and sisters of Uttar Pradesh is destined to be destroyed. . They will get such punishment which will set an example in future. Your Uttar Pradesh government is committed to the safety and development of every woman. This is our resolve - promise."
Opposition parties are targeting the Yogi government on the issue of law and order in the state. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi sought the resignation of the chief minister, while BSP chief Mayawati said that he should go to Gorakhpur and run the Math. Questions are being raised on the attitude of the police and the administration of the state.
On September 14, in a village in the Chandpa police station area of Hathras, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered. The charge of this incident has been leveled against four youths of the village itself and all of them are in the custody of the police. The victim was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment, where she died a few days ago. Since then, the opposition party has been a constant attacker on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the BJP government.
