Voicing his concern at the construction of big dams, BJP MP Varun Gandhi said he was personally against the projects that could harm the environment.
"I personally feel we do not need the big dams in our country that aim to displace people", Gandhi told reporters at the end of his two-day visit to the state.
The firebrand MP, who is the election in-charge of Assam, said the reason for his maiden visit was to strengthen the party and help it win as many seats as possible in the assembly elections slated next year.
On the election tie-up with the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Gandhi said, "Our first target is to get battle ready and at this moment my job will be to ensure that our party is in a strong situation."
On the issue of illegal migrants, the BJP MP said it was a national issue and not a communal one.
"It is the job of the rulers to ensure that the country is free from illegal misgrants", he said.
The BJP leader said his reason for visiting Assam was to help his party the maximum number of seats in next year's state election. "I hope to get young people involved in the party for which I have to travel the length and breadth of the state", he said.
The BJP leader said he planned to visit at least 20 of the 126 assembly constituencies in the run up to the election besides, attending a public rally at Nagaon on September 29.
"I want to help the party provide a positive alternative to the Congress in the next election", he said.
Gandhi said the issue of infiltration from Bangladesh, lack of development and unemployment would be the major plank for the party in the next assembly election.
