Five visually-disabled people began a five-day fast on Gandhi Jayanti in protest against the state government's decision not to appoint candidates with visually disability as Vidya Sahayaks against seats reserved for handicapped candidates. The fast outside MJ Library on Ashram road is led by Labhu Sonani, president of Akhil Gujarat Netrahin Jagrut Sangh (AGNJS).

The four other members of AGNJS who are also on fast with Sonani are Deepak Dabhi, Ravi Segalia, Pankaj Sagli and Devyani Thakor. They are all protesting against state government's step-motherly attitude towards visually-disabled people.

"There are many pending demands disabled people which the state government has not attended to," Sonani said.
