With corporate India expressing concern at governance deficit due to corruption-related matters, Congress has taken a position that it is for the courts to clear the air on issues related to money stashed away in foreign banks.
“There are issues related to provisions of dual taxation avoidance and income-tax laws that do not permit the government to place this information in the public domain, but then the courts can always reveal it in wider public interest,” a senior Congress MP well versed in income-tax matters said.
The opposition BJP has been demanding that the government and the Supreme Court go all out to get back money stashed abroad.
But before industry captains highlighted corruption and demanded that steps be taken to reduce governance deficit, Congress has been saying that BJP raised the issue out of political considerations.
“Why didn’t BJP take any concrete steps when it was in power for six years?” party MP Manish Tewari had been arguing.
