How about witnessing the Brazilian carnival right here in the city? If all goes well, then the famous parade will come live on the city’s streets during the Kankaria carnival this December. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has grand plans for this year’s carnival, which is an annual event held at Kankaria lake.

While the entire state was gripped in election fever, the officials of AMC were firming up plans for organising the spectacle. The city’s own carnival, which was confined to Kankaria lake, will come out on streets this year involving citizens and performers. With singing and dancing, the performers will move from Sanskar Kendra to Kankaria on December 25.

An official of AMC, requesting anonymity, said, “We want to take the carnival to a next level. We want to conduct a similar carnival parade on city streets like the carnival in Rio and Sao Paulo. With this, we want to attract thousands of people towards the carnival.”

The parade will include music bands, cartoon characters, etc.

Besides celebration and merry-making, this edition of the carnival will try to contribute to a noble cause and help the needy through ‘charity bag’. Elaborating the plan, the AMC official said, “We want to help the society, too, through our carnival. A huge charity bag is being planned which will be placed at Kankaria, where visitors can come and donate books, clothes and other material, which will be distributed to the needy.”

According to the organisers, the charity bag will be so big that the visitor will need to climb the stairs, placed beside the bag, to reach the mouth of the bag and put in their contributions. The huge bag will be an added attraction at the venue.  However, the ideas of the parade and the ‘charity bag’ are awaiting the approval of higher officials in AMC.

Also, there will be screening of kids’ films by Children’s Film Society of India. The films will be shown on all seven days during the carnival.
