Police stop ABVP activists who were taking out a rally outside Jadavpur University campus in Kolkata on Monday to protest against alleged attack on them by the students of the University last Friday during the screening of Vivek Agnihotri's film 'Buddha in a Traffic Jam'.

The statement by Ghosh comes in the wake of the Jadavpur University students filing a complaint of molestation against ABVP supporters.

West Bengal’s BJP President Dilip Ghosh sparked a major controversy after he termed Jadavpur University girls ‘shameless’ on Saturday. “Jadavpur University girls are shameless. They have filed baseless complaints of molestation. They lean on boys and then complain of molestation. If they are so scared of their self-respect, why do they have to go the university?” Ghosh asked.

Ghosh was speaking at a presser held at the party’s headquarters in Kolkata.

The statement by Ghosh comes in the wake of the Jadavpur University students filing a complaint of molestation against a few ABVP supporters.

This is not the first time that the saffron brigade has raised questions on Jadavpur University students. On Monday, during a counter-rally organised by the supporters of ABVP, the wing secretary Subir Haldar threatened to chop off Jadavpur University students’ legs if they dared to step out of the university. “These students have converted this university into a centre of disturbance and anti-national activities. We will chop their legs if they dare step out of the university,” Haldar had said.

On May 6, clashes were reported when filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri entered the campus for screening of his movie Buddha in a Traffic Jam. He was shown black flags by the university students and his car was gheraoed. Despite denial of permission to hold the screening at Triguna Sen Bhawan, Agnihotri decided to screen the film on campus premises.

When Agnihotri began the screening, university students started screening another film Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai close to where he was holding the screening, eyewitnesses informed. Minutes later, two student groups – several ABVP supporters accompanying Agnihotri and the university students – got into a scuffle, resulting in the clashes. According to sources, four outsiders were then marked and taken to the Aurobindo Bhawan and kept hostage. Students claimed that the four outsiders had allegedly molested two students amid the clashes and they could only be handed over to the police.

While the four were kept hostage, the VC and the registrar PK Ghosh rushed to the campus late on Friday night. On the other hand, hearing that the four outsiders were affiliated to the ABVP, BJP leader Roopa Ganguly reached the campus. However, she was not allowed to enter the campus. Another stand-off ensued between the BJP supporters and the students.

Later, the police intervened and the four were handed over to them.
