A woman who adopted a 6-year old, accused of rubbing red chilli powder on the girl's genitals was arrested, on Thursday evening at the Titagarh police station area in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
Last week, the 6-year old girl peed on her bed and the disgruntled mother allegedly rubbed chilli powder on her genitals.
After an hour-long ordeal, the girl fainted and was rushed to the RG Kar Hospital. The girl's condition is now stable after receiving a week's treatment and has been sent back home.
Sandhya Sen, the mother and her husband adopted this girl four years back from their neighbours. However, the adoption was done without any official documentation or informing the district administration.
"I knew the couple as they reside in the neighbourhood. The girl was abandoned by her mother after her father died. Since then the grandmother and I used to take care of the girl. We have been facing acute financial crisis as a result of which we decided to give her up for adoption. This couple came forward and adopted her," said Poornima Das, aunt of the girl.
Members of Child Welfare committee are likely to visit the girl's house and help them out with the finances. They are going to sponsor the girl's education too.
