While on the one hand, the police are putting in their best of efforts to suppress the alleged spurious liquor deaths in the city by maintaining that the victims died after consuming methanol not spurious liquor, relatives of the deceased claim the mishap was a direct consequence of spurious liquor distribution in the city.

Rasik Chauhan, a victim, resident of Isanpur, said he is a drunkard and consumes alcohol every day. “I purchased a potli for Rs50 from a bootlegger at Victoria garden and had it along with my friend Chotalal,” he said. Chotalal died on Thursday night after consuming the liquor.

Chauhan further said that the liquor they had did not taste any different. “It tasted similar to my regular peg, so we consumed it without realising that it could be spurious,” he told DNA. Chauhan also confirmed that they had consumed liquor and not anything else. “I am a regular drinker, how can I not know the taste of a liquor, it was liquor,” he said.

Chauhan consumed the liquor on Thursday at around 10:30 pm near the Victoria garden. Chauhan also said that even after the hooch tragedy, it was not very difficult to get liquor. “No, there was barely any problem to get the liquor, I have been getting it regularly,” he said.

Another victim admitted to VS Hospital was Noor Pathan (33), whose relatives confessed that he consumed country-made liquor. But doctors at VS hospital said that Pathan had consumed some solvent, and is under treatment. “They said that the poison in the blood was because of some solvent; we are wondering from where he got the solvent,” Pathan’s sister Sama said.
