Wholesale price of onions dropped further by Rs7 per kg in the Azadpur market in Delhi today on improved supply, an indication of early softening of the prices of the kitchen staple.

The supply of the root vegetable almost doubled in the market today.

Over 1,600 tonnes of onions arrived in Azadpur market (Asia's biggest wholesale fruits & vegetables market) today, general secretary of Onion and Tomato Merchants Association Rajendra Sharma told Press Trust of India.

It was 850 tonnes yesterday.

Augmented supply of the veggie brought down the wholesale rate to Rs18-38 a kg today against Rs 25-45/kg yesterday, Sharma said.

The downslide in the wholesale rate has had no immediate impact on the retail cost of onion in the national capital where it continued to rule high at Rs50-60/kg, traders said.

But, the slide indicate the retail price might ease here soon.

The retail onion prices in other metros too were high.

While onion sold at Rs50-65/kg in Mumbai in retail it was at Rs62/kg in Chennai and Rs45-55 per kg in the Eastern metropolis, traders said.

Meanwhile, agri-cooperative Nafed today plied 20 tempos loaded with a cumulative quantity of about 8000 kg of onions in different localities in the national capital to sell the vegetable at Rs35 a kg to the common people.
