Her husband, Ranjeet Kumar, who serves as a secretary at the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission, had instructed the household staff not to allow her into the house due to her involvement in a child abduction case, an NDTV report quoted the police as saying.

Sources suggest that Surya may have gone to her husband's home to evade arrest by Tamil Nadu police in connection with the kidnapping of a 14-year-old boy in Madurai.

Kumar's advocate Hitesh Gupta said that the couple had separated in 2023 and were in the process of getting a divorce. On Saturday, Ranjeet Kumar had gone out to finalise their divorce petition. Upset at not being allowed into the house, Surya ingested poison and called the 108 ambulance helpline, as per the police report.

The police discovered a purported suicide note written in Tamil but did not disclose its contents. Her estranged husband has refused to claim her body.

Surya's name was linked to a case involving her alleged gangster boyfriend and his associate. The case pertained to the alleged kidnapping of a boy on July 11 over a financial dispute with the child's mother. The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore, but the Madurai police successfully rescued the boy and launched a manhunt for those involved, including Surya.
