UDHAMPUR: A woman army officer Lieutenant Sumita Chakravorty allegedly committed suicide by shooting herself with the sentry's rifle on Thursday at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir.
Commissioned into the Army in October last year, the 25-year-old officer was attached with the Army Supply Corps of 5071 ASC Battalion, Northern Command and for the last few days reportedly suffering from depression.
The body was being brought to Bhopal via Ludhiana, said her father P B Chakraborty, an employee of BHEL.
Chakraborty said his daughter had recently complained of not being satisfied with the job as she had been given the responsibility to arrange late night parties. Her mother was staying with her for some time.
A postgraduate in Chemistry from local Nutan College, Lt Sushmita wanted to join the Army Education Corps, Chakraborty said, adding she had undergone training at the Officers Training Academy at Chennai six months ago.
A large number of people had gathered at their Saket Nagar residence waiting for the arrival of the body, according to a Bhopal report. The police had registered a case.
On June 3, Sumita had returned with her mother from Bhopal after availing two months leave.
