An alert mother of a minor girl succeeded in averting the rape of her daughter and helped the police arrest the culprit.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at Gujarwadi in Katraj area.
The Bharati Vidyapeeth police have identified the culprit as Rahul Pandit Deshmukh (23) of Katraj.
According to the police, Deshmukh works as a security guard in the area. He stayed in the same neighbourhood as that of the girl.
On Sunday afternoon, Deshmukh spotted the girl alone and stopped her. He told the girl that her mother has stocked firewood in a room and she should take it home. When the girl went inside the room, he followed her in and tried raping her.
Speaking to DNA, assistant commissioner of police Vasant Sonawane said, “When the girl’s mother noticed that her daughter was missing, she started searching her and suddenly heard sounds from a nearby room.
“When she knocked the door, a scared Deshmukh opened the door and ran away. However, the girl and her mother started crying for help. Alarmed by their cries, some passers-by nabbed Deshmukh who was later handed over to the police.”
