VADODARA: Former Union minister and noted economist Dr Y K Alagh has been appointed as the new chairman of Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) for a term of three years.

Alagh's appointment was announced on Monday at Anand town by the acting chairman of IRMA, Dr Amrita Patel. Alagh succeeds Dr Varghese Kurien, who resigned from the institute’s chairmanship a couple of months ago.

Alagh, who has also been the vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, was appointed unanimously, she said.

At a meeting of the board of directors of IRMA held today under the chairpersonship of Patel, resignations of five senior professors including two members on the institute's board of directors were also accepted.

The five senior professors -- Vallabh Biswas, H Panda, Smita Pande, L K Vasvani and S Biswas -- were believed to be close to Kurien and were told to quit their post, IRMA sources said.

Prof Vallabh Biswas and Prof H Panda were also on the board of directors of IRMA.
