A youth who jumped into the Sabarmati river on Tuesday to rescue a girl who tried to commit suicide had to be rescued by Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) of the city. The emergency service jawans managed to haul out both of them. The girl was admitted to VS hospital in an unconscious state.

The man, identified as Pardesi, 22, a local resident, dived into the river to save the girl identified as Palak Shaikh, 21. The latter had jumped off Jamalpur Bridge with the intention of ending her life, police said.

"Immediately after Pardesi saw the girl going down into the river, he too jumped after her to rescue her. However, he found himself drowning," Mohammad Malik, an AFES employee, told DNA.

"Three people from our team first jumped to rescue the youth and later, two more people helped bring the girl to shore," Malik further said. Sources claimed that Shaikh had plunged into Sabarmati to end her life.

Shaikh was rushed to VS Hospital in an unconscious state. Condition of Pardeshi as well as Shaikh was reported to be out of danger.
