Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, accused of blasphemy, has been Z plus security cover in view of the threat perception to his life.

CHANDIGARH: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, accused of blasphemy, was on Wednesday provided with Z plus security cover in view of the threat perception to his life.

"We have decided to provide him with the Z plus security cover in view of the threats to eliminate him," Haryana's Additional DGP (CID) P V Rathee said.

The decision to provide the cover to the Sirsa-based Dera head, who had found himself at the centre of a controversy for his alleged imitation of tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, was taken in a state security review committee meeting held here.

Over a week back, Akal Takht -- the supreme temporal and spiritual body of Sikhs -- had expressed dissatisfaction with the apology tendered by the Dera head, saying the gesture was a "shrewd tactic to divert attention".

The Sikh priests have said the social boycott of the Dera would continue and those who had become his followers should return to Sikh mainstream.

Meanwhile, Rathee also said they had sought "clarifications" from the Centre regarding to security cover being provided by the state to the Congress MP from Bhiwani, Kuldeep Bishnoi and Lt Gen (retd) Hari Prasad, in whose cases it was felt that security cover was "overlapping".
