Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the famed 20th century Janaki temple in this Neplease town and offered special prayers.
Modi, who arrived here today on a two-day state visit to Nepal, directly went to the Janaki temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita, from the airport.
Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli welcomed his Indian counterpart upon his arival at the temple complex. Modi will spend around 45 minutes in the temple.
Modi took part in the Shodasopachara Pooja at the Janaki temple, local media reported. Devotional bhajans of Sita and Ram was played during the 10-minute long prayer perperformed by Modi at the temple.
Addressing to media, Modi said, "I am glad to be here in Janakpur. I am here to pay respects to King Janak and Mata Janaki. I thank the PM of Nepal Shri Oli for accompanying me during this visit to Janakpur."
"Today's welcome in Nepal shows the affection the people of Nepal have towards the people of India," he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Oli jointly inaugurates direct bus service between Janakpur and Ayodhya. "This is a historic moment," Modi said.

Modi's visit to Nepal is seen as an attempt by both the countries to bring back normalcy in ties after a spell of uneasiness as it comes little over a month after his Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli came to India.
his is the third visit of Prime Minister Modi to Nepal and the first high-level visit from India since the formation of the new Government in Nepal this year.
On Thursday, Modi had said India would remain a steadfast partner of the Himalayan nation in its quest for growth and development.
Describing his two-day trip to Nepal as a reflection of his government's commitment to "neighbourhood first" policy, Modi had said the Himalayan nation has entered a new era and India would continue to support it.
On Saturday, he will visit Muktinath. He will come back to Kathmandu in the afternoon and offer prayers at Pashupathi Nath temple, Kumar said.
Later, Modi will meet the leaders of various political parties which will be followed by a civic reception to be hosted by the mayor of Kathmandu.

► Modi is scheduled to arrive in Nepal at around 10:15 am
► Prime Minister Modi will then flag-off a new bus service named Janakpur-Ayodha bus (TBC) and launch Ramayana Circuit.
► In the afternoon, Modi will travel to Kathmandu where he will meet Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun.
► In the evening, he will hold delegation-level talks with Oli, External Affairs MInistry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.
The prime ministers are likely to sign a number of pacts and inaugurate the Rs 6000-crore Arun 3 project which is expected to generate around 900 MW of power.
